Opening the Dutch Theatre Festival, this modern, musical take on the classic Shakespearean tale of a ruthless man with a lust for power updates the Bard’s poetry with new songs by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan.
As the youngest brother of a king with healthy sons, it seems impossible for Richard to ever ascend to the throne himself… but ‘impossible’ to Richard is merely a thrilling challenge. Through intrigue, flirtation, threats and the occasional murder, he makes his way to the top – only to be confronted with the questions: ‘Now what?’ and ‘Is this all?’
With songs full provocation, seduction and irony, Waits and Brennan have captured the thrilling tone of Shakespeare’s portrait of wicked royalty while rendering it all the more accessible to modern audiences. Gijs Scholten van Aschat’s gripping portrayal of Richard is supported by a band led by Vincent van Warmerdam and a troupe of young actors and musicians, and balanced by powerful, experienced actresses who offer a formidable counterpoint. A sell-out must-see in 2010, the 2011 show is bound to be one of the festival’s hottest tickets.
